Everything about the slug generator
Why optimize your URL slugs?
The slug is the human-readable part of a URL that identifies a page. Google recommends short, descriptive, lowercase URLs. An optimized slug like 'french-crepe-recipes' outperforms an auto-generated one like 'post-12847' in both SEO and click-through rate.
In French, accented characters (é, è, ç, à) must be converted to ASCII equivalents. Stop words (le, la, les, de, du) lengthen the URL without adding SEO value. This tool handles both transformations automatically.
Conversion happens in real time in your browser. No data is sent to any server — you can process confidential titles or internal data safely.
Use cases
- Bloggers and content writers
- Generate optimized slugs for your blog posts before publishing in WordPress, Ghost, or any CMS.
- Web developers
- Test slugification logic here before implementing it in your back-end code.
- SEO specialists
- Optimize URLs for product pages or landing pages. A well-built slug contains target keywords with no filler words.
- E-commerce managers
- Create consistent product page slugs: 'mens-running-shoes-size-10' rather than 'the-best-mens-running-shoes-in-size-10'.
How does the generator work?
Type or paste a title into the input field. The slug generates in real time: text is lowercased, accents are stripped (NFD + diacritics removal), and special characters are removed.
Enable the 'Remove French stop words' option to automatically strip articles, prepositions, and conjunctions (le, la, les, de, du, et, ou, à, pour, par, avec, dans…). Choose your separator: hyphen (-), underscore (_), or dot (.).
A URL preview appears at the bottom, showing the slug in a realistic URL context. Copy the result in one click.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a URL slug?
- A slug is the part of a URL that identifies a page in a way that's readable by both humans and search engines. In 'example.com/blog/crepe-recipes', the slug is 'crepe-recipes'. It uses lowercase letters with no accents, spaces, or special characters.
- Which separator is best for SEO?
- Google recommends hyphens (-) as URL separators because they're interpreted as spaces between words. Underscores (_) are used in file naming conventions, and dots (.) are sometimes used in technical identifiers.
- Why remove stop words?
- Stop words (the, a, an, of, in, and, or…) add no value for search engines and lengthen the URL. '10-best-crepe-recipes' is more effective than 'the-10-best-recipes-for-crepes-in-the-french-style'. Shorter URLs are also easier to share.
- Is my text sent to a server?
- No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser via JavaScript. No data is transmitted, stored, or logged.
